Item Details
Description
A group of three African vessels, including two Botswanan coiled basketry lidded storage jars and a Kenyan (possibly Kamba) bead-decorated gourd vessel with a clear acrylic base plinth base.
Elaborate gourds, such as the example offered here, known locally as 'kitete' are made by older women for a young lady of marrying age, forming part of her dowry. The bride would then bring one of these gourds with her to her new home, using it for the first time to feed her husband. Thereafter, the kitete is hung up in the couple's residence as an ornament, and subsequently used only for special occasions.
Height of taller jar, 20 inches; the gourd height, 11 inches
