Sierra Leone, Mende Peoples, Carved Wood Helment Mask for Sande Society (sowei), H 17" W 8" | This type of mask is used by the Sande female society (women's secret society) on the occasion of the most solemn anniversaries, while exercising justice, during funeral ceremonies and in the initiation that makes it possible to become a member. This mask features an elaborate coiffure of concentric half-circles, as well as scarification marks on the face.
