The Yellow Jacket Silver Mining Company [x=#8211/] Gold Hill Mining District, Nevada Territory - signed by William Sharon. Very clean Yellow Jacket certificate issued to William Sharon and signed by him on the back, the important Comstock banker for the Bank of California. Also on the reverse is J. (James) A. (Alpheus) Ralston's signature (Not to be confused with Ralston's other brother, James Andrew Ralston), the brother of William Ralston, President of the Bank of California. The company was incorporated February 17th, 1863, and capitalized at $1,200,000; 1200 shares at $1000 per. Issued in 1865 for one share to William Sharon signed by John B (illegible)sitor as president and William Watson as secretary. Cancelled by two thin lines drawn through the two signatures at the bottom. "Incorporated under the Laws of Nevada Territory", a brown 25-cent Power of Attorney stamp at left. This very fine certificate is in unusually fine condition and is an important autograph piece for western mine financier collectors. Purchasing shares in Comstock was a routine activity for Sharon, who learned quickly that this was a method from which he could gain important information about the mines and the financial health of the mining business. The Bank of California later took mine and mill stock as collateral on loans, which upon foreclosure was added into the Union Mill & Mining Company.
