Item Details
Description
Lot of 3 certificates relating to Reese River district, datelined San Francisco. Includes: 1) Pensylvania, 1864. The best part of this certificate is the vignettes. A rare small [x=#8216/]Goddess of Gold[x=#8217/] adorns the left. A steam locomotive pulling ore cars, or coal cars since this is a Pennsylvania related stock, is in the middle. # 26 for 25 shares to David R. McKee. Signed by Thompson Campbell Jr. and president Charles H. Ensign. Dateline San Francisco January 24, 1864. Incorporated October 13, 1863. Small 5c and 20c revenue stamps. Not cancelled. Drouaillet printer. Location: [x=#8220/]Reese River D. Lander Co. NT.[x=#8221/] [x=#8216/]Pensylvania[x=#8217/] is not necessarily misspelled. It was an acceptable spelling through the Civil War. Just Google [x=#8216/]Pensylvania[x=#8217/]. Top left corner ever so slightly rounded. Writing is faded, but readable. Otherwise no edge, corner pin hole or discoloration issues. Found no information on this mine. 2) Jo Lane G&S MC Stock - Austin's, Dave Buell superintendent. We have not seen this certificate before. # 8 for 5 shares to HW Bradley. Signed by RW Heath and secretary (?). Dateline San Francisco 1863. Incorporated July 9, 1863. Located in Reese River district. 25c Insurance revenue stamp. Not cancelled. Staining on back shows through Wrinkles. Overall nice. Mountain mining vignette and semi-nude allegorical woman vignette. Britton & Co. printer. This stock certificate is one of the Front Street consortium. Instead of investing in stock, they invested in mining companies and sold stock. This group of San Franciscans hired Benjamin Silliman Jr to promote their companies. The report neatly ties together and describes the 30 mines. However an assay of over $5000 a ton should have given an investor pause. Ore could be worked for $40 to $50 a ton. The big Comstock companies were working at $100 a ton. Benjamin Silliman, Jr. was essentially a hired gun. [The Bradley Find: Scripophily of a Nevada Mining Venture by Mahler] Dave Buell helped name the city of Austin, was closely involved with the Sanitary Sack of Flour, came a few votes shy of being Nevada[x=#8217/]s first Governor, etc. 3. Chicago Gold and Silver Mining Company Stock. Issued to president on the day a 50c assessment was levied. Did he have to pay? #187 for 16 shares to H. W. Bradley on October 23, 1863. Issued in San Francisco. Incorporated July 28, 1863. Signed by president H. W. Bradley and secretary J. W. Drinkhouse. Choice clipper ship vignette. Reese River District. 2 small revenue stamps. Creases, dog ears, and O inch tear on bottom center crease. Part of San Francisco's Front Street Consortium. A group of Front Street businessmen who seemed more interested in selling stock than building mines. No production noted. Certificate was sold to president H. W. Bradley a very notable San Francisco photographic businessman. Reese River California Fred Holabird Collection
