This is a WInchester model 1873 with a birthday in 1888 S/N 263386 . It is chambered for 38 WCF and has a 24 in. octagon barrel and a full length magazine tube. The magazine carrier is marked 38 caliber as well as the top barrel flat. Winchester markings are light, two-line and slightly off-center, on the top flat. The dust cover appears to be the second model. Both forend and buttstock are replacements and fit is good but not exact. The bottom of the receiver and tang are pitted indicating a rebluing at some point. All colors match fairly well with side-plates and a consistent patination between the receiver, barrel, mag. tube, nose cap, and buttplate. The buttplate has the sliding door for the cleaning rod, now vacant. Sights appear to be original to the gun; and the bore has only minor light pitting on a strong rifling. The action is tight. (This caliber matches the Colt SAA at .38-40 also in this auction). This gun is an antique and no attempt has been made to fire this gun to confirm its mechanical integrity. Nor should this gun be fired without the examination by a qualified gunsmith. Any attempt to fire an antique gun is at the risk of the owner and not consistent with the value of the firearm.
