Description
Colorful play poster for The Klondyke Nugget by S F Cody. Printed in Belfast, this play was performed in England. The scene depicts a Native American holding a knife after stabbing a man in the chest and taking his gold nugget, which he holds high admiring its glow. "Samuel Franklin Cowdery/Cody, 6 March 1867 [x=#8211/] 7 August 1913, born Davenport, Iowa, USA was a Wild West showman and early pioneer of manned flight. He is most famous for his work on the large kites known as Cody War-Kites, that were used by the British before World War I as a smaller alternative to balloons for artillery spotting. He was also the first man to fly an aeroplane built in Britain, on 16 October 1908. A flamboyant showman, he was often confused with Buffalo Bill Cody, whose surname he took when young. On 7 August 1913, Cody was test flying his latest design, the Cody Floatplane, when it broke up at 200 feet (61 m) and he and his passenger, the cricketer William Evans, were killed at Ball Hill, Laffans Plain, Cove Common near Farnborough." from wikipedia. He may have shot and killed a lady in a shooting exhibition in which his aim was to shoot around the lady, but fatally struck her. 20x29.5", 1.5" right chip, 1.25" right edge tear, light edge foxing.
