Stencil-decorated Patent Banner Root Cutter, Oliver E. Thompson, Ypsilanti, Michigan, c. 1899. The red-painted wood cabinet with plank ends screwed to trestle feet, the top enclosing an iron disc with separate gauge- and knife-cutting edges operated by the projecting crank, a hopper at rear bottomed with sheet iron sieve, surfaces decorated with geometric stencil patterns in black and inscribed 'Thompson's / Banner Root Cutter / No. 7 / Patented Octo. 24. '99. [U.S. Patent No. 635,450]/ For Poultry, Young Lambs, Etc.' across the front panels in bronze paint, the interior wall of hopper also inscribed with bronze stenciled letters to read 'Sold By / The W.E.
