The Gorilla (Mountain Gorilla).

Acrylic, ink and monotype with fabric collage on shaped, mounted paper, 1985. 610x813 mm; 24x32 inches. Signed, titled "Mountain Gorilla" and dated in pencil, upper edge. With the artist's original hand-written label on the frame back.

Provenance: private corporate collection, New York.

Amos deconstructed traditional representations by embracing experimental techniques as a painter, printmaker and weaver. In a related painting, Josephine and the Mountain Gorillas, 1985, Amos imagined Josephine Baker walking through an abstract expressionist color field painting followed by two gorillas.
