A Meissen vinegar jug and cover, circa 1735

Modelled by J.J. Kaendler, of fluted and lobed baluster form with a grotesque mask spout and scroll handle, one side of the rim with an apeture, painted in underglaze-blue with sprigs of indianische Blumen and insects and the moulded decoration embellished in underglaze-blue, 16.8cm high, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue (minor chips) (2)

The first mention in Kaendler's work records of models for vinegar, oil and mustard jugs is in June 1733; Rainer Rückert suggests that the entry probably refers to the present lot with relief-moulded decoration around the body (quoted by J. Weber, Meißener Porzellane mit Dekoren nach ostasiatischen Vorbildern, vol. II (2013), cat. no. 142 - a similar oil or vingear jug in the Schneider Collection, Schloss Lustheim; another, formerly in the Gustav von Gerhardt Collection, Bupdapest, was in the R.M. Collection, sold by Lepke's Berlin, 1 December 1925, lot 107).

There is a 1.7cm flat chip to the underside of the rim of the cover, as well as two very small flat chips and a few tiny nicks to the cover rim.
There is a miniscule flat chip to the top edge of the rim of the jug, and two very small flat chips to the footrim.
Otherwise in good condition.
