Description
Filipo Tibertelli DE PISIS (1896-1956)Title: Vase of Flowers (circa 1949)Measures: 33x25 cmSigned: the lower left corner: de PisisBiography:Filippo De Pisis (Ferrara, May 11, 1896 - Milan, April 2, 1956) was an Italian painter and poet, linked to metaphysical painting. His birth name was Luigi Filippo Tibertelli. He made his debut as a poet in 1916, with the collection "Canti della Croara." After its publication, he came into contact with Giorgio De Chirico, Carlo Carrà and Alberto Savinio, who were in Ferrara during the First World War. The young De Pisis became the local guide for these members of the Parisian avant-garde. This relationship led to Pisis's brief alliance with the school of metaphysical painting. Although he had not begun painting, de Pisis held informal salons in his Ferrara apartments, where most of Chirico's metaphysical paintings were first exhibited. In 1919 De Pisis moved to Rome, where he began to paint. While major publishers of his day criticized de Pisis for producing overly sentimental poetry, this emotional streak carried well on canvas. De Pisis is best known for his urban landscapes, metaphysically inspired marine scenes, and still lifes, especially those depicting flowers. His work has a particularly aerial, in-the-moment quality, and is charged with a kind of pathetic pleasure-pain. De Pisis also executed a large body of lesser-known work, including homoerotic sketches of the male nude. De Pisis spent his life in Rome, Paris, and Venice. He had a very extravagant lifestyle; he had a pet parrot named Coco, and in Venice he was one of the few residents to use a gondola. He had two personal gondoliers who worked for him 24 hours a day, and who wore black and gold livery. Pisis's work was shown twice at the Venice Biennale: once during the painter's lifetime, and once posthumously. Pisis's work for the Collezione Verzocchi in 1949-1950 is currently in the Pinacoteca Cívica in Forlì. A large part of his work can also be found in the Museo Filippo de Pisis in Ferrara. He died in Milan after a long illness, in 1956.
