Description
Anton Mauve original oil Artist: Anton Mauve (1838-1888)Technique: oil on canvas on board.Measures: 59 x 73 cmSigned in the lower right cornerTitle: Rural landscape.Biography: Anton Mauve was born on September 18, 1838 in Zaandam. His father was a Baptist preacher; shortly after Anton's birth, the family moved to Haarlem. He received his first drawing classes from the animal painter Pieter van Os, and from Wouterus Verschuur, famous for his stable interiors. In 1858 he was in the village of Oosterbeek, the so-called Dutch "Barbizon", where young artists met to study nature "en plein air". There he met painters such as Paul Gabriel, Willem Maris, and Gerard Bilders. Later, Anton spent a period of time living in different cities of the Netherlands, until in 1871 he decided to take up residence in The Hague. He married Ariette Carbentus, Vincent van Gogh's cousin. His friendship with the Oosterbeek painters was an excellent way to enter the circles of the Hague School group, of which he became one of the main representatives. His paintings were widely accepted and were selling well thanks to the good international contacts of Vincent van Gogh's uncle, then an art dealer in The Hague. In 1881 Van Gogh decided that he wanted to be a painter and asked Anton Mauve to help him get started. Mauve, who had a very well set up studio, allowed him to work in it and to draw pictures and watercolors of his models. In early 1882 Van Gogh and Mauve had serious arguments over Vincent's relationship with the prostitute Sien Hoornik. In the end Vincent left The Hague, but he always spoke with respect of Mauve, whom he considered a great artist. Anton Mauve started working around Laren, a picturesque town between Amsterdam and Utrecht. He even decided to leave The Hague and settle in Laren, in a house he named "Ariette" in honor of his wife, and which was near the moor where he liked to go to paint in the open air and to the Singer Museum. Mauve died unexpectedly in 1888. Vincent van Gogh wanted to pay tribute to the artist by sending his widow one of the three versions of flowering trees that he had painted in Arles, with the dedication "Souvenir de Mauve".
