Description
Artist: David Teniers II (1610-1690)Title: Bowling gameTechnique: oil on canvasMeasures 68 x 132 cmIt requires some restoration detail. It is not signed and is being sold as attributed.Important painting of excellent dimensions.Dutch painter, called the Younger, born in Antwerp in 1610 and died in Brussels in 1690. His prodigious ability to imitate all the teachers, made him give the nickname of Proteus of painting. He cultivated his father's genre with preference and brought it to perfection. He trained together with the painter Brouwer, who profoundly influenced him, painting numerous tavern scenes that were more pleasant and effective than those of his teacher, such as the work El rey bebe, preserved in the Prado Museum in Madrid. His work does not focus exclusively on gender issues, but also cultivates mythological and religious themes, the production of satires with animals being important, dedicated to narrating events of the time. He was, without a doubt, the best traditional painter in Flanders, with a technique that abandons the specificity of Flemish brushstrokes to use a broader and more dynamic one. It offers a wide vision of the popular types, extracted from the humblest layers, which are inserted in festive, country and tavern scenes. His magnificent work Los monos is the culmination of a process that began with Bosch's painting of monsters. In 1647 he was appointed curator of the painting gallery of Archduke Leopold William, Governor of the Netherlands, when he made the Portrait of Archduke Leopold in his art gallery. In 1651, he moved to Brussels where he established a flourishing workshop, with a large number of disciples among whom his art spread. In 1663, he founded the Brussels Academy of Arts. His production in recent years does not acquire the quality of the first, highlighting the landscapes, silver tones.
