Other Notes: Relief sculptures such as these were often found adorning the exteriors of temples. Some featured iconic representations of deities and holy figures alongside auspicious images of beautiful women, musicians, and loving couples known as mithuna, as depicted here.

The depiction of mithuna has multiple interpretations. While they obviously celebrate the many sensual pleasures of being alive, they also symbolize the human soul's yearning for spiritual union with the divine, also known as bhakti. This rich symbolism underscores the profound spiritual significance of these mithuna.

For an example of another relief sculpture with a similar openwork pediment above the figures, see a relief from the Estate of Philip Baloun which sold for $8,125 (see Christie's sale 1974, lot 750, on March 21, 2008).
Condition
Each with a darkened patina, and with very minor superficial abrasions but otherwise in great condition. Condition reports are offered as a courtesy and are typically published in Moran's catalogue or can be made available upon request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that an item is free from defects or restoration, nor does a reference to particular defects imply the absence of others. Buyers are responsible for determining to their own satisfaction the true nature and condition of any lot prior to bidding. Though buyers are not legally required to inspect lots prior to purchase, failure to do so may constitute a waiver of complaint that an item was not delivered in a condition equal to the existent condition at the auction.
