Up for sale are two volumes of a very rare ten volume set: Volumes VII and VIII of THE COMPLETE WORKS OF GUSTAVE FLAUBERT, SALAMMBO EDITION, Flaubert, Gustave. Limited edition of 999 books printed, of which these two are part of set #826. New York and London: Printed only for Subscribers by M. Walter Dunne (1904). Silvery gray cloth boards with gilt and black titles to spine, top page edges gilt, other sides uncut, with several illustrations to each volume.
Red moire design textured endpapers on thick paper stock. Beautiful title page in multicolors - see photo.
Vol. VII: Illustrated frontis has great detail and tissue protector is intact with a separate illustration and lettering. Contents: Temptation of St. Anthony; Over Strand and Field. Binding tight and square, no loose, torn or missing pages, no writing inside or out, no former owner bookplate. Entire inside of book is very clean. Covers show staining, corners bumped lightly and face inwards a bit, but not worn. Light wear to head of spine; heel has more wear, some scratches to front cover, bump to left edge of spine. Especially considering the age of this volume, book is in Very Good plus condition.
Vol VIII: Volume contains: The Candidate; Castle of Hearts; St Julien the Hospitaller. Colored frontis, illustrated tissue protector and other illustrations. Binding is tight and square, no missing, loose or torn pages, no writing inside or out. Staining to covers; small area to lower left side of spine is worn through; back endpaper torn at upper right corner, lower right corner of bep looks like it was stuck to facing part of bfep; brown stain on lower right corner of pages starting a bit before halfway through the book about 1/2" H and about 1" along right edge to right corner of pages, green marking on back cover, bump to upper edge. Despite these imperfections, book is very clean overall inside and else very clean, no musty.
Each volume measures 8 1/8" L x 9" H x 1 1/2" approx.
