Description
Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumba Island, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A massive hand-carved woman's wedding headdress made from sea turtle shell, with copper caps and filigree capping the ends of the headband. Aristocratic women wore large hair combs like crowns during special events and festivals, and the open work carvings were associated with longevity and fertility and the turtle shell itself was also a symbol of nobility. The vertical side panels resemble boat prows from this region, and the intricate cut out shapes are often seen in wood carvings. These headdress combs were especially precious heirlooms and stored within the upper peak of the clan house for safe keeping when not in use. In photos woman wear the combs at the back of their head, which suggests this headdress may have been worn similarly, with the metal headband ends framing the wearer's temple. Size: 11" L x 9.5" W x 12" H (27.9 cm x 24.1 cm x 30.5 cm); 15.5" H (39.4 cm) on included custom stand.
