Henri-Joseph Harpignies (1819–1916) was a French landscape painter and watercolorist, part of the Barbizon school, which played a key role in the prelude to Impressionism. Born in Valenciennes, France, Harpignies turned to painting relatively late in life, dedicating himself fully to art after the age of 27. Despite this late start, he became one of the most respected landscape painters of his time.

Harpignies was primarily influenced by the works of Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot and the landscapes of his contemporaries in the Barbizon school, a movement that emphasized the beauty and emotional power of natural scenery. He traveled extensively throughout France, Italy, and elsewhere in Europe, capturing the varied landscapes with a keen eye for detail and a profound appreciation for the natural environment.

Throughout his career, Harpignies exhibited at the Paris Salon, receiving several honors, including a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889. He was also made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1875, further solidifying his status as a distinguished artist.

In addition to his landscapes, Harpignies occasionally painted figures and historical scenes, though these works are less well-known. He also was an accomplished watercolorist, a medium in which he excelled, particularly in his later years.
