MEDIUM:Brown Wash w/ Ink SGD/UNS:Unsigned DATE OF WORK:C 16th - 17th C CATALOG NOTES:An excellent and large 16th - 17th C Old Master painting on laid paper done largely in watercolor and gouache with some ink highlights visible. The subject is the Ascension or Assumption of the Virgin. A familiar theme among Old Master painters. In this version the Virgin Mary is ascending to Heaven supported by numerous putti and an arch angel at lower right. One of the putti is floating over head preparing to put a crown on Mary's head. Numerous figures on the ground and the tomb take up the rest of the image. All are done with expert anatomical draughtsmanship. It is a very interesting and complicated scene, unlike any paintings or drawings that I could find in researching the piece. When I removed this from it's frame, I found that the work was mounted a long time ago onto another sheet of what looks like wove paper. Also, there is an attribution, written twice, on reverse of that sheet to Annibale Carracci along with an old price of 130 puonds. The piece has provenance from the P Cornette Saint-Cyr auction company in Paris. This was one of, if not the finest privately owned auction houses in France, since 1973. It is important to note that the work was sealed in the frame and backing paper, so Saint-Cyr could not have known about the inscriptions on reverse when they sold this.
