Connie Mack 1944 TLS Re: "?the next World Series?" w/ JSA Certificate
TLS
A typed letter from Connie Mack as President of the American Base Ball Club of Philadelphia, addressed to one Shannon Fife, a film screenwriter. 1p, measuring 8.5" x 11", Philadelphia, PA, dated January 11, 1944. Boldly signed at conclusion as "Connie Mack" in black fountain pen. Within, he mentions getting together with Fife during the next World Series, for which he also offers tickets. That year, the World Series would be held in St. Louis, Missouri, unusually matching the St. Louis Cardinals and Browns, marking the third time in which both teams shared the same home field. Exhibits flattened folds and expected surface creasing, with uneven toning throughout; isolated soiling present at lower right corner. Else, very good. Accompanied by an LOA from James Spence Authentication.
In full:
"Received the very fine package of pecans that you and your brothers sent me some little time ago. Want to assure you that all of my family enjoyed same very much and want me to convey their thanks to you. Am in hopes that we can get together at the next World Series wherever they may be played. If you will kindly drop me a line in advance will see that tickets are secured. Sincerely hope everything is going along nicely with you and your brothers and that you will have a very successful year in 1944."
Cornelius McGillicuddy, better known as Connie Mack, was an American professional baseball catcher, manager, and team owner. The longest-serving manager in Major League Baseball history, he holds records for wins (3,731), losses (3,948), and games managed (7,755). Mack managed the Philadelphia Athletics for the club's first 50 seasons of play, starting in 1901, before retiring at age 87 following the 1950 season.
Shannon Fife (1888-1972) was an American journalist, humorist and film scenario writer. He worked on at least 86 motion pictures over the silent film era before returning to journalism to write for magazines and newspapers.
