Moe Berg Signed 1946 Check to Pitcher C. Wagner. The Catcher Was a Spy!
Signed Check
A beautifully displayed signed check and personal stationery from baseball player-turned-spy, Moe Berg. The check measures 6.25" x 2.75", Newark, dated October 9, 1946. An endorsed check, drawn on the National Newark & Essex Banking Company, with a payment of $50.00 made out to pitcher Charles Wagner. Signed "Morris Berg", just about a week after the conclusion of the Nuremberg Trials. With a large bank stamp and cancellation punches. Mounted and displayed in a mat with a blank sheet of Berg's personal stationery and a black and white portrait. The display measures 11" x 22" in total. Light wear, soiling, and staining to the check. There is a small stamp overlapping the "B" in Berg's signature and some minor ink smudging around the signature. Boldly signed. Light toning to the sheet of stationery. Overall very good.
Morris "Moe" Berg (1902-1972), while an average baseball player, was an incredibly intelligent man with a gift for languages. He graduated from Princeton and Columbia Law School and spoke seven languages. After he retired from the MLB in 1939, he was recruited to work as a spy with the Office of the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs (OIAA). He would later go on to accept a position with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) Special Branch in 1943 and helped spy on the German atomic bomb program. Berg returned to the United States on April 25, 1945, and resigned from the Strategic Services Unit that August. Berg would return to Europe in 1946 to attend the International War Crimes Tribunal in Nuremberg.
