Walt Whitman Signed 1st "Author's Ed.", 2nd Printing of "Two Rivulets"
Signed 1st Ed.
A true signed Author's Edition, Second Issue of "Two Rivulets; Including Democratic Vistas, Centennial Songs, and Passage to India" signed by Walt Whitman, but the signed frontispiece portrait has been removed from opposite the title page, trimmed and re-mounted to verso of front fly. Camden: Author's Edition, 1876. First edition, second issue with a blank page between "As a Strong Bird." and "Memoranda." One of only 600-650 copies printed. Twelvemo, 32, 84, 18, x, 14, 68, 120pp, with one unnumbered leaf of plates. With a small tipped-in sheet in the back advertising "Leaves of Grass" and "Two Rivulets". The photographic portrait frontispiece signed by Whitman has been trimmed and re-inserted on the reverse of the front fly. There is a book-plate of Pauline and Ozzy Fletcher on the front paste-down. Publisher's three-quarter tan morocco over green marbled paper-covered boards, brown morocco spine label, stamped in blind and in gilt. Darkening at the spine, with rubbing, wear, and soiling to the boards and edges. Cracked spine. Light toning and scattered foxing to internal pages. Boldly signed by Whitman - with the inscribed date slightly clipped off.
In early May 1875, Whitman announced: 'I shall? bring out a volume this summer, partly as my own contribution to our National Centennial. It is to be called Two Rivulets?It will embody much that I had previously written & that you know, but about one-third, as I guess, that is fresh." The book contains Two Rivulets, Democratic Vistas, Centennial Songs-1876, As a Strong Bird on Pinions Free, Memoranda During the War, and Passage to India. The first printing of Whitman's volume consisted of only 100 copies, but the second printing issued a few months later with numerous revisions, consisted of a further 600-650 copies.
