Archive

A group of three clipped signatures from notable Medal of Honor recipients Issac C. Kidd, Franklin Van Valkenburgh, and Richard I. Bong, the latter two having been killed in action during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. No place, all undated, measuring between 2" x 2.75" and 3" x 2". Varying degrees of age toning, darkened handling marks, and minor edge tearing to all. Uneven margins throughout. Else, very good.

The lot includes:

1.) Issac C. Kidd (1884-1941) clipped signature aboard the U.S.S. Vega , signed as "I. C. Kidd, C. O." along bottom edge. A rear admiral in the U.S. Navy, Kidd was the highest ranking casualty at Pearl Harbor, becoming a posthumous recipient of the Medal of Honor.

2.) Franklin Van Valkenburgh (1888-1941) clipped signature aboard the U.S.S. Melville , signed as "F. Van Valkenburgh, C.O." along bottom edge. The last Captain of the U.S.S. Arizona , Van Valkenburgh was killed in action at Pearl Harbor, becoming a posthumous recipient of the Medal of Honor.

3.) Richard I. Bong (1920-1945) signature clipped from a transmittal envelope, written all in his hand: "Maj. Richard I. Bong 9th 7/Sq 49th 7 Corp/ 90 Post. A. P.O. 503/ San Francisco Cal." During World War II, Major Bong distinguished himself as the country's top flying ace, receiving the Medal of Honor in 1944. A year later, he died while testing a Lockheed P-80 jet fighter shortly before the war ended.
