A letter from future Union General Nathaniel Lyon, regarding ordnance reports. 1p, measuring 7.5" x 9.5", Fort Lookout, dated October 3, 1856. Signed "N. Lyon" and addressed to Colonel H. K. Craig, Chief of Ordnance for the U.S. Army. The letter has flattened mail folds and faint ink spotting. Boldly signed, and very fine overall.

Reading in full: "Herewith enclosed I respectfully transmit the Quarterly Return of Ordnance and Ordnance Stores pertaining to Company 'B' 2nd Infy for the Third Quarter of 1856."

Accompanied by two engravings of Lyon: the first, measuring 6" x 9.5", engraved by A. H. Ritchie, and the second, measuring 7.75" x 10.75", engraved by Alonzo Chappel. The two engravings have light wear, toning, and soiling. Both very good.

Nathaniel Lyon (1818-1861) was the first Union general killed during the American Civil War, losing his life at the Battle of Wilson's Creek on August 10, 1861. He had previously fought in the Second Seminole War and Mexican-American Wars, with Fort Lookout having been established by Lyon in 1856 while serving in the 2nd U.S. Infantry. The fort was ultimately abandoned one year later, in 1857. Lyon was in command of the Union arsenal in St. Louis, Missouri just prior to the Civil War, and helped foil Jefferson Davis's plans with Governor Claiborne to secede from the Union. When the war began, he was promoted to brigadier-general and given command of troops in Missouri. At the Battle of Wilson's Creek, Lyon's forces were severely outnumbered and he was wounded twice before finally being killed while rallying his troops.
