A typed letter from President Ronald Reagan signed as "Ron" at conclusion and addressed to Alfred H. Kingon, a later member of his cabinet. 1p on White House letterhead, measuring 7" x 10.5", Washington, D.C., dated September 16, 1982. The day the letter was written corresponds with the first day of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos' visit to Washington, which Reagan mentions with optimism in addition to discussing inflated interest rates. Expected letter folds, with minor surface imperfections throughout. Near fine.

In part:

"Today is President Marcos' day and things seem to be going very well. Nancy and I met them and were their guests at the 'palace' in 1969 representing President Nixon.
I share your view about the importance of psychology in the world of economics. I've made a couple of trips since California to Kansas and Utah, and believe there is a momentum from the recent market activity and the drop in interest rates. While I was in Kansas, a Savings and Loan, which I understand is one of the half dozen largest in the country, announced a lending rate for mortgages and investment of 12-3/4%. Before things slow down, it would be nice if the prime and the discount rate would drop another notch."

The day of our letter, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos (1917-1989) and First Lady Imelda Marcos (b. 1929) arrived in the United States for a state visit. During his welcoming remarks, Reagan fondly recalled his 1969 visit to Manila as governor of California, accompanied by First Lady Nancy Reagan. The couple had traveled to the Philippines in October 1969 to attend the opening of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. During this visit, Marcos charmed him with stories of his exploits fighting the Japanese, earning Reagan's admiration and the continuation of American support for his regime until the 1983 assassination of Benigno ?Ninoy? Aquino, Jr., which prompted the President to cancel his trip to the Philippines and distance himself from Marcos. Indeed, by the time Marcos was deposed during the People Power Revolution of 1986, Reagan did little to encourage his pleas to return to power.

Alfred H. Kingon worked as a Wall Street investment adviser and financial magazine publisher before entering politics, serving as the Assistant Secretary of Commerce from 1983 - 1984. From 1985 - 1987, Kingon served as President Ronald Reagan's cabinet secretary. His political career culminated in a 2-year-long tenure as U.S. Ambassador to the European Union, from March 1987 - June 1989.
