One of the most important civil rights leaders of the nineteenth century, Douglass had met with presidents, politicians, and other prominent figures in order to advocate for abolitionism and civil rights. The respectful and admiring tone of this tribute reflects the enormous respect he commanded from the general public, regardless of skin color.
