Group of Antique Burmese Textiles. This collection includes a woven skirt, a woven breast cover (akhin), and a pair of loin cloth end panels. The dimensions are as follows: 1) Skirt: 62'' x 25.5'' (157 x 65 cm); 2) Breast cover: 30'' x 12'' (76 x 30 cm); 3) Loin cloth end panels: 27'' x 18'' (69 x 46 cm) and 30'' x 18'' (76 x 46 cm).The breast cover is intricately woven with a combination of cotton and silk using a warp face tabby ground with supplementary weft patterning. Glass beads adorn the edges, adding to its ornate beauty. Such textiles are highly prized and can take up to a year to produce. They originate from the Chin group of Burma. The embroidered end panels were once part of a loincloth worn by the Mara Chin people of Burma. Loincloths were the traditional attire for men in various Burmese groups, often worn alone. The panels feature a dark blue cotton ground dyed with indigo multiple times. Linear embroidery in polychrome silk decorates the panels with rows of geometrical shapes. The intricate counted stitch work resembles weaving due to its precision. Provenance: Ex Yosi Barzilai collection.
