Description
Several of lots 504 through 527 are part of a group of Russian items consigned by a prominent Cincinnati family. All may have been purchased from the Armand Hammer Sale of Imperial Russian items held at Marshall Field & Company in Chicago in July of 1933. Many have documentation from the Hammer Collection. Others do not but the all reportedly came from the Hammer Sale.
Miniature Karl Fabergé gold wash silver kovsh from the collection of Czar Nicholai II in the Alexander Palace, Tsarskoye Selo, Russia. The body and scroll handle exhibit lavish cloisonné roped designs of unusual bell flowers on scrolling vines enameled in atypical colors of orange, chestnut, blue and white against a pleasing ivory yellow backdrop. Tiny hollow depressions scatter over the surface and enhance this awe-inspiring kovsh. Height 1 1/2 inches, width 2 1/8 inches. Impressed with the Imperial Warrant, the cyrllic name of Karl Fabergé, the spade logo containing the 88 standards, the right facing monarch and the Delta symbol. Hand engraved touch marks. Accompaning is a hand written Russian Imperial Exhibit tag and the typed certificate from the Hammer Collection at Marshall Field & Company, Chicago, Illinois, dated July 15, 1933 with brief descriptions. The certificate stating “The ‘Kovsh’ is designed in the style of the ceremonial drinking vessel used in the 17th Century”. Impressive example with fine documentation. Excellent beautiful condition.
