A finely-decorated Japanese lacquer suzuribako in the manner of Shibata Zeshin, Late Edo to Meiji period 日本硯箱 或柴田是真繪 江戶末至明治

The shallow rectangular box with rounded edges and corners, the cover decorated with a box and fruiting peach branch against a dark textured ground, the interior of the cover with two scrolls and a book, one scroll slightly unfurled, revealing a finely-executed landscape; the interior fitted with a pair of side-by-side trays, further decorated with a box and rolled scroll, one side inset with a water dropper and inkstone; Japanese wood box

For a closely related box, with incised signature “Zeshin”, see the sazuribako from the Alan and Simone Hartman Collection, sold at Bonham's, New York, December 14, 2023, lot 112.  That box was originally published in Spink and Son, Ltd. “Japanese Lacquer: Miyabi Transformed”, London, 1997, no. 43., and sold at Christie's London, November 16, 2000, lot 64.  According to a letter on Christie's letterhead, dated October 17, 1997 accompanying the present lot, the Hartman sazuribako and the present lot were originally in the same collection, and may have originally been a set.
