One of Annie Flanders' last issues as Editor-in-chief of Details featured a cover image of a painting of Cyndi Lauper in the style of a Vargas girl by artist Kathy Grove after a photograph by Caroline Greyshock. In the photoshoot, Lauper was styled by Laura Willis, with hair by Justin Ware and makeup by Jody Morlock. The February 1989 issue featured an interview of Lauper by Allie Willis titled 'Girls Just Want to Have Glasnost,' regarding Lauper's recent trip to Moscow where she participated in a rock-and-roll exchange program. Kathy Grove is a conceptual feminist photographer who began her career as a photo retoucher for fashion magazines. The airbrushing and photo manipulation techniques she learned working in fashion is now used in her own work to altar the appearance or edit out figures from famous photographs.
