Rare japanese by whiting, circa 1874, sterling silver flatware set - 58 pieces (including 8 mother of pearl handle knives) in beautiful vintage chest. This japonesque pattern features a multi-motif design depicting realistic birds among a background of grasses, with a bamboo border. Excellent condition, some pieces with varying monograms on the reverse (some no monogram). Early flatware sets commonly did not include hollow handle knives, so traditionally in these very early sets, mother of pearl handle knives were used. This set will be lightly polished and sealed in individual plastic sleeves prior to shipping. Fabulous!
