Description
Teke, Female Protective Figure
21 cm (8"), D.R. Congo

The Teke inhabit areas in the Republic of Congo, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and partially in Gabon. Within this society, the family head, the "Mfumu," had extensive authority, including the right over the life and death of family members. The depicted female figure was specifically used to protect pregnant women. Such small figures were often treated by the healer, the "Ngantsie," with medicine and magical substances to "bring them to life". This figure wears a headgear resembling a hat and, despite its feminine representation, is characterized by a kind of chin beard. The face is adorned with parallel tattoos, the neck wrapped with snake skin and a red band. A cloth loincloth covers the lower body. The dark brown color and a beautiful patina complete the appearance of this gem.
