The exact meaning of this emaciated male figure is not known with certainty but it has been a constant element within the traditional Rapa Nui sculptural vernacular for centuries. In the examples presented here, the heads expressively render the traditional form but the rest of the figure’s anatomy is absent Carved wood and shell. From the collection of Joseph Salamanca. Sizes: Ranging from 34.5'' x 2'' (88 x 5 cm) to 43'' x 6'' x 2'' (109 x 15 x 5 cm).
