Biography: Ernest Williams Christmas was born in Adelaide, South Australia. He studied art in Paris and then lived in England where he was made a member of the Royal Academy. Yearning for new frontiers, he ventured to Argentina and Chile where he painted mountains and lakes, and then to San Francisco where he resided in 1900 and then again in 1915. Between those years, he lived and painted in New Zealand and exhibited most prominently at the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts in 1906. Honolulu’s Paradise of the Pacific magazine featured his oil and watercolor landscapes after his arrival here, including a painting of the volcanic crater of Haleakala. He painted scenes on Hawai. His plan to visit the islands of the South Pacific, Australia, and Japan were unfulfilled when he died in Honolulu a mere two years after his arrival in 1916. Very few of his paintings have ever been seen in Hawa, however, his works can be found in New Zealand galleries.
