Biography: Charles Gilbert-Martin, born August 26, 1839 in Pleine-Selve (Gironde), and died July 21, 1905 in Saint-Thomas-de-Conac, is a caricaturist and journalist French. After studying at the college of Blaye, Charles Gilbert-Martin went to Paris in 1862 to try a literary career. A pupil and friend of Felicien Mallefille, he met with little success as a dramatic author and turned to journalism by collaborating with the Sun of Moses Millaud and the yellow Nain Aurilien Scholl. Another satirical newspaper publishing drawings by the cartoonist Girondin, Le Hanneton is in turn hit by a conviction a few months later. Gilbert-Martin, who also collaborated in La Rue de Jules Valles, was indeed a Republican opposed to the Second Empire. After the Revolution of September 4, 1870, Gilbert-Martin was attached for a few months to the Ministry of the Interior, then entrusted to Leon Gambetta, and works with the delegation of the Government of National Defense in Tours. He then joined the North Army commanded by Faidherbe. As a staff captain, he was elevated to the rank of squadron leader during the last months of the war against Germany. This republican militancy was worth eleven convictions, including three prison terms, to Gilbert-Martin, who was then also the editor of a republican daily, Le Bordelais, "fast newspaper."Don Quixote mocked the local Bonapartist MP Ernest Dreolle, and Gilbert-Martin faced the latter November 27, 1878, in a pistol duel Plessis-Piquet, whose two men were left unscathed. In 1897, Gilbert-Martin found Clemenceau in the team of L'Aurore, which in 1902, after having sold part of his library and furniture to Drouot, he finally left the capital to settle in Charente-Inferieure, Saint-Thomas-de-Conac. He died in this last commune, and is buried about twenty kilometers further, in his native village.
