John Pike (American, 1911-1979), Figures on the Coast of Bermuda

Watercolorist John Pike was a student of Charles Hawthorne and Richard Miller. In 1933, he traveled to Jamaica, where he painted and illustrated advertisements for various industries. In 1938, he returned to the United States and began exhibiting. During the second World War, he painted records of the U.S. occupation in Korea, and afterward completed paintings for the United States Air Force. These paintings are in the permanent collection of the USAF Academy. Throughout his career, he illustrated the covers of several magazines and painted advertisements for large corporations. He operated the John Pike Watercolor School in Woodstock, New York, from 1960 until the end of his life.

Pike was a member of the National Academy of Design, Salmagundi Club, Allied Artist, American Watercolor Society, Society of Illustrators, Woodstock Artist Association, Southwest Watercolor Society (Honorary), Philadelphia Watercolor Club, and the Grand Central Galleries. He received numerous awards throughout his lifetime.
