Item Details
Description
Anita Malfatti (1889-1964) BrazilianOriginal Still LifeMeasures: 18 x 24 cmAnita Malfatti was a Brazilian artist and painter recognized for being a pioneer in developing the European and North American avant-gardes in Latin America, adding her local culture to them, and breaking the artistic approaches established up to that moment in her country.Born in Brazil to parents with Italian and North American origins, Malfatti was always linked to the world of art, as her mother was a teacher of this discipline and of languages. Since she was little she was instructed in the artistic sphere, and despite the motor difficulty that she had in her right arm, she began to paint. He ventured into plastic sculpture, and with the support of his family, in 1910 he traveled to Berlin to study art at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. In Germany he worked alongside painters like Lovis Corinth and learned about new techniques such as expressionism. Five years later, the young woman would leave for New York to complement her artistic development through the study of drawing and engraving, the latter under the teaching of Homer Boss.Upon returning to Brazil, the artist began to develop the techniques learned on her journey, introducing new currents that impacted the established art world of her country. At first there was a shared dislike and little understanding surrounding Anita's paintings. A few years later the painter held her second exhibition with more than 50 works. Despite this, the various criticisms and appreciations persisted. However, Malfatti continued to develop avant-garde and modern paintings, and was even one of the members of the Group of Five, made up of painters and artists of the same current. In addition, he actively participated in the Sao Paulo Modern Art Week, a meeting that promoted Brazilian modernism.Years later, Malfatti traveled to Paris thanks to a scholarship, and back to his country he continued painting. Over the years, the artist also gave painting classes and finally died in 1964. Anita Malfatti is today recognized as an introducer of the new artistic avant-gardes in her country.
