Item Details
Description
Artist: William James Glackens (1870-1938)Title: Portrait of childTechnique: oil and canvas Measurements: 82 x 70 cmProvenance: Private CollectionBiography: William James Glackens (March 13, 1870 – May 22, 1938) was an American realist painter and one of the founders of the Ashcan School of American art. He is also known for his work helping Albert C. Barnes acquire the European paintings that form the core of the famous Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia. His vibrantly painted, darkly colored street scenes and depictions of daily life in New York and Paris before World War I first established his reputation as a major artist. His later work had a brighter tone and showed the strong influence of Renoir. For much of his painting career, Glackens also worked as an illustrator for newspapers and magazines in Philadelphia and New York.
