Claudio Jimenez Quispe (Peruvian, b. 1959) "Nativity Crucifix," ca. 1998 CE. A cross sculpture with a nativity scene, Christ at the center with Joseph and Mary, and angelic musicians. Interestingly these figures are made from wires and covered with a plaster mixed with potatoes - the starchy vegetables form a solid medium to paint with tempera once dry. The bottom front is signed by the artist and "Lima Peru." Claudio Jimenez Quispe is a globally acclaimed Peruvian artist known for intricate retablos, and comes from a renowned family of retablo artisans; including his brother Nicario Jimenez. His exceptional work has been displayed in numerous international exhibitions, and he regularly showcases at the International Folk Art Market in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Size: 12.2" L x 2.5" W x 18" H (31 cm x 6.4 cm x 45.7 cm)

Missing arm on one trumpet player. Tips of several wing tips and tip of upper trumpet is reattached. Stable pressure fissure in the plaster on the upper arm. Overall good condition. Signed by artist.
