Western Europe, England, Germany, or Austria, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. Antique and functional gilt-brass opera glasses inlaid with mother of pearl (nacre) with binocular style lenses. These have a convenient folding handle and focus wheel for adjustable magnification. The middle brass bridge next to the right eye has a faint maker mark, perhaps a crown for the country of origin. This binocular style developed in the early 19th century and opera glasses quickly became important accessories for theater patrons, not only to see the performers but to spy on other theater goers as well. Size of binoculars: 3.75" L x 2" W (9.5 cm x 5.1 cm); handle: 6" L x 0.75" W (15.2 cm x 1.9 cm)

Condition
Chip to nacre inlay on handle. Small indentation to brass rim around one eye lens and minor surface nicks. Some cloudiness to lenses. Maker mark is faint and indiscernible. Good and functional condition!
