J. Hana (Hopi, 20th century). Ant or Hornet Kachina. Painted pine wood, 1977. Signed with date, location, and material on verso. A wonderful pine wood plaque of a kachina - perhaps the hornet or ant kachina - painted with vertical and horizontal stripes in brilliant hues of red, yellow, white, blue, and black. Crowned by a pair of curved antennae, the figure presents rectangular eyes and wears a slender necklace of animal hide, as well as a tunic and kilt. According to the verso, this plaque is made of pine from Buckskin Mountain on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in the Arizona strip of Kaibab Forest. Size: 9.3" W x 24.1" H (23.6 cm x 61.2 cm)

Condition
Signed with date, location, and material on verso. Some minor nicks and abrasions as well as natural hairline fissures to wood, but otherwise intact and excellent with good preservation of pigments. Drill hole on verso of head, possibly for suspension.
