Rhoda Mariah Natanine (First Nations / Canadian, Clyde River / Kangiqtugaapik, disc number E5-372, b. 1937). Bear with Seal. Soapstone carving. Signed in syllabics with disc number on underside of base. A fascinating and quite sizable soapstone carving featuring abstract, zoomorphic imagery of a bear holding a seal. Though commonly seen animals in the arctic, here they are depicted in a stylized, metamorphic fashion with minimalist features that seemingly blend into one another, evocative of a scene of shamanic transformation. Size: 11.1" L x 5.2" W x 12.6" H (28.2 cm x 13.2 cm x 32 cm)

Signed in syllabics with disc number and "12050-2" on underside of base. Some nicks and scratches to surface as shown, as well as shipping to bears mouth. Otherwise, intact and excellent.
