Native American, Southwestern United States, Four Corners region, Arizona, Dine (Navajo), ca. mid-20th century CE. A lovely hand-woven sheep wool rug in perhaps the regional Chinle style, using characteristically muted hues of gray, white, black, and golden ochre. In Dine weaving tradition the deity, Spider Woman, taught the ancestral people to weave using a fantastical loom and materials made from the earth, lightning, and sky. Cotton was their main material for hundreds of years before the Spaniards' introduction of sheep. Size: 37" L x 22.5" W (94 cm x 57.2 cm)

Dark staining to one side. Some minor pulling and fraying to fibers, but otherwise intact. And nice vintage condition.
