Pre-Columbian, North/Central Coast of Peru, Chimu culture, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A lovely pottery stirrup vessel that exhibits stone-burnished surfaces and charming avian creatures along the handle. The red-orange vessel features a central conical protrusion beneath the overhanging, stirrup-shaped handle, and with the handle itself being decorated with a gathering of petite avian creatures as well as a monkey along the top. Two conical elements rise from opposite sides of the shoulder. Size: 6.75" L x 6.3" W x 9.125" H (17.1 cm x 16 cm x 23.2 cm)
Provenance: private Carroll collection, Georgia, USA, by descent; ex-private Jim Carroll collection, Maryland, USA, acquired 1960s

Condition
Lengthy hairline fissures along body as well as around both handle terminals, with light abrasions, softening to some finer details, and scattered areas of fire-darkening, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to avian creatures along handle.
