Item Details
Description
This is a particularly detailed sculpture of a Native American man on his horse. The horse is young but strong and stands calmly as the rider cocks his riffle, the reigns hanging loosely around his neck. The rider has placed a beautiful handmade blanket over the horses back to keep him warm and to sit on. The rider is also dressed warmly with sheepskin moccasins, tasseled trousers and a long blanket over his protective long sleeved shirt. Around his neck is a tied scarf and around that flows his long, thick hair that is tied with a string at the back. His expression is one from a wise person but he carries with him a sadness of something lost. Across his back are his bow and arrows that he spent the few days before his trip making. He is a peaceful but deadly warrior, armed and ready for his fate. This is a handmade sculpture out of 100% bronze and cast using the ancient “Lost Wax Method”. It has a two tone brown patina and is signed J. E. Fraser. James Earle Fraser was born in Winnona, Minnesota on November 4, 1876 and died October 11, 1953. He was a famous Neoclassical American Sculptor, he was most famous for carving the Pediment of the National Archives in Washington and his weary Indian, horse statue entitled “The End of the Trail “and his Indian Head of “Buffalo” nickel. James Fraser was exposed to Frontier life and Native Americans at an early age. His father was an engineer who worked for the railroad companies as they expanded across the west, pushing the natives further and further west into confined Indian Reservations. Many of these memories are expressed in J.E. Frasers work. Fraser attended classes at the Art Institute of Chicago and was an assistant to Richard Bock. Bock helped Fraser gain admission to the école des Beaux-Arts in Paris were Fraser worked with Alexandre Falguiere.
