Offered here for your consideration is a group of prehistoric pottery effigies. Composed of clay with no further decoration these effigies rely on their portrayal of animals to create interest. There are three snail shells, one bird and three mammals. Fascinating work in clay for no apparent utilitarian purpose so possible made for ritual, play, or home decor. PROVENANCE: Rust collection. The history of this collection comes from the private property of Dennis Sipe's White Mountain Hereford Ranch near Springerville, AZ. This well documented prehistoric site was excavated by William Hinckley. Mr. Sipe then wound up with the pottery and artifacts collection, which he kept and displayed until death. After Mr. Sipe passed away, the Rust family acquired the collection. Included is a copy of a history of the ruin (believed to have been written by Mr. Hinckley in 1987) in which it is clearly stated that no burial sites were found or disturbed.
MAKER: Unknown potters.
APPROX AGE: Prehistoric.
SIZE: The snail shells measures approximately 7/8 inches wide. The largest effigy measures approximately 3 inches long.
CONDITION: As found with some restoration expected. These items have not been subjected to a black light or any other tests, other than visual by us, so the extent of any possible restoration is unknown. Buyer is responsible for determining this to their satisfaction before bidding. Please look closely at the pictures as they are an important part of our description and are hereby incorporated into the description, specifically with regards to condition.
