Description: Comment on the poem by Edmund C. Stedman. Illustrated by Gustave Doré with over two dozen large-format steel engravings; title page and cover designed by Elihu Vedder. (Elephant folio) 46.3x36.5 cm (18¼x14½"), gray cloth stamped in gilt, purple, and black, all edges gilt. First U.S. Doré edition.Includes the rare publisher's box and plain dust wrappers. Doré's dark imagery is the perfect complement to Poe's brooding poem. One of the most lavish productions and the last Doré completed before his death. There is a Christmas gift inscription on the front flyleaf dated in the year of publication, not surprising as the book was produced to supply the Christmas gift market.

Condition

Box and original plain dust jacket quite worn, soiled, and splitting; cloth exceptionally fresh with just minor edgewear and bumping to the corners, small dampstains to edges of about final 16 leaves not affecting illustrations; near fine volume in fair box with original jacket laid in, both scarce in any condition.
