Description
Lindbergh Book Authographed by ERNEST HEMINGWAY, 1942.

The following by English Professor Daniel Kaplan: Hemingway was a complicated individual. On one hand, you had to love his uncompromising attitude. On the other hand, he was something of a bellicose braggart. He loved to get into fistfights and test his mettle against anyone.
<br/.He was apparently already called “Papa” while hanging out in Paris as one of the big names of the “Lost Generation” in the early 1920s. People were already calling him “Papa” when he was in his early 20s, even people who were much older than him. I have no doubt that he forced his nickname upon them if they weren’t willing to call him that of their own accord.

Though it is (very well researched) fiction, I would recommend reading James R. Benn’s When Hell Struck Twelve, if only for its passage describing Hemingway running wild along the road to Paris, conducting guerilla strikes on Nazi troops. Benn does an admirable job of showing that Hemingway was both a great guy… and a guy most of us wouldn’t be comfortable around if we liked keeping all of our teeth. You can only hang out with someone like that for so long before he decides the two of you need to square off and see who the bigger man is.

Odds are he gave himself that name (one of my pet peeves) and decided that everyone else had to call him that as well. Hemingway was apparently big on giving people nicknames. He thought of himself as a natural leader and likely figured that he was able to spank anyone who looked at him askance.
