Instead of the traditional choice of Paris, Ann, a European princess, decides to travel to New York to choose the designer for her coronation wardrobe. She chose New York because she wanted to experience New York night life, especially hear popular music live. Her escort, her aunt, the Countess Margaret, will have no such thing, she who will only allow Ann to do the more refined things if anything at all beside visit the design houses. On their first night in New York, Ann sneaks out to listen to music and meets Riff Manton, a college student earning some extra money by singing.
