Item Details
Description
A solid piece of Irish history. Circa 1870s to 1890s fighting club with carved icons relating to the Irish Rebellion and bloodbath of 1798.
Inspired by The American Revolution, The United Irishmen launched a full-fledged revolt against British rule in May 1798, but their fight was short-lived. The British and loyal Irish forces swiftly crushed the Irish Revolution. In just five months, the fighting left over 30,000 Irish men, women, and children dead, regardless of their loyalties.

From May to October of 1798, the United Irishmen fought hard for independence. But the arrests and deaths of key leaders, failed French military support, and the lack of proper supplies led to their quick defeat. The United Irishmen mobilized a grassroots army of Presbyterians, Catholics, and some Church of Ireland members. Tens of thousands of United Irishmen battled the British without proper firearms, using blacksmith-made iron pikes instead. Most battles were fought in the towns around Dublin and Belfast, and in County Wexford where the Irish Revolution initially met success. Thus began the cycle of violence between the Orange and the Green.

The club is relief carved with shamrocks, crossed halberds *pikes), ERIN, and REMEMBER 98. The fact that it is carved 98 as opposed to 1798 indicates the carving was done prior to 1898. A very cool piece of Irish history in the form of folk art. Erin go Brach!
