Description
Plains Indian Buckskin Doll, Pima/Papago Basket & Jasper Arrowhead. Decriptions: 1) Vintage Native American Plains “Indian” Chief Buckskin Doll (ca. mid-20th c. CE). Size: 11.5"L x 5"W. A rawhide & cotton doll, representing a Native American male clothed in deerskin (associated with Plains tribes). Simple beading and a dried hide face, painted with eyes and mouth. The hair is made from cotton threads and tied back in braids. Natural Pheasant plumage were added to the headdress. Provenance: ex- Artemis Gallery auction; ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop (a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, AZ & Allenspark, CO). Condition: Fully intact figure with some light staining and discoloration to hide. 2) Pima/Papago Geometric Woven Basket (ca. 1930-1950). Size: 8.5” diameter x 2 5/8” high. The Pima (Akimel O'Dham) and Papago (Tohono O'Odham) were native to the Sonoran Desert of the present states of southern AZ & northern Sonora, Mexico. The Pima & Papago were known for fighting against Apaches and Yavapais on behalf of Spain, Mexico, and the U.S. Even though they were fierce warriors, they produced magnificent baskets. This coiled cylindrical basket was hand twined with natural plant fibers such as a willow, sumac, and/or devil's claw. Their narrowly-coiled baskets were made of cattail or bear grass and were closely stitched with willow splints. Provenance: ex-collection of Mary K. F. Leong (NJ and WA). acquired in the 1970s. 3) Jasper Arrow Tip Artifact. This 1” artifact was dug up in Tuscon, AZ and sold in a trading post there in the late 1960s. It is still in the vintage package dated 1969.
