Lot of 5 Pre-Columbian Moche Gold Alloy Dangles (ca. 300-600 CE). Sizes range from approx. .75”-1”. This lot includes a pair of Moche gold sun-design rondel dangles, 2 misc. hammered gold dangles , and a gold dangle fragment. Ancient Moche goldsmiths created these rare pieces using gold alloyed with copper. These gold sections were likely sewn onto clothing or fancy headgear to decorate royal attire. The Moche culture preferred gold over silver since gold was regarded by them to be tears of the sun. Ex-Dr. Gerald A. Smith collection. A large portion of’ this collection of antiquities is now housed at the Museum of Us (former Museum of Man) in San Diego, CA & Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad, CA.
